All You Have Ever Wanted To Know About Laser Hair Removal
LASER stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Laser hair removal was introduced over 15 years ago, with significant advancements in the past decade. Hair removal lasers produce FDA-approved “non-ionizing” safe light-transmitted radiation.
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser — an intense, pulsating beam of light — to remove unwanted hair.
During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair.
Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes multiple laser hair removal treatments to provide an extended hair-free period. Periodic maintenance treatments might be needed as well.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Laser Treatment Is A Major Advancement
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It’s the technology now preferred for hair removal and a range of other cosmetic skin treatments. IPL technology is different from older lasers that use one specific light wavelength to target unwanted hair. –At Dr. Roth’s office, we use a new, patented version of IPL, called BBL. Broad-spectrum light (BBL™) contains multiple wavelengths to target melanin in the hair follicles of an entire body region with efficiency and minimal discomfort. BBL laser hair removal is much more effective and takes less time than other laser technologies. Most patients see benefits even after a single treatment session.
Prep Is Simple
You’ll need to shave the areas to be treated within 24 hours before your IPL Laser Hair Removal (LHR) treatment. This allows the shortest possible distance for the light to travel down the hair follicles to kill their blood supply.
Hair grows in different stages. LHR is only effective while the hair is in its active growing stage. Multiple treatments, every 4-6 weeks for up to 6 sessions, are needed to progressively remove hair follicles during their periodic growth phases.
Stay out of the sun- A tan increases the risk of side effects, such as skin lightening. If you have a tan — either from sun exposure or sunless tanning products — wait until the tan fades completely before undergoing laser hair removal. Some doctors recommend staying out of the sun for up to six weeks before laser hair removal. Avoid plucking, waxing, and electrolysis- These hair removal methods can disturb the hair follicle and interfere with laser hair removal.
Sciton BBL™ Treatments
One recent survey of aesthetic professionals ranked Sciton as the #1 aesthetic device provider. Sciton™ BBL™ treatments are highly effective, safe, and fast.
Before treatment, the area to be treated is cleansed, and a cooling gel is applied. A glass surface BBL™ hand piece is then activated and moved over the target area. The motion-based technique evenly heats hair follicles, assuring a smooth outcome for the entire area.
Your procedure may take a few minutes to a half hour depending on the size of the area to be treated. For example, IPL hair removal for an area like the underarms can take 20 minutes.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
Any part of your body can be treated. The most common areas include the armpits, legs, chest, and back. Because hair on different areas has different growth rates, you many need to stagger appointments to capture varied growth stages when your treatment includes different regions of the body.
We categorize areas as small, medium, and large, and our pricing is based on that. Small areas include the bikini region, cheeks, chin, feet/toes, hands, navel, underarms, and upper lip. Medium areas include the abdomen, chest, upper arms, lower legs, or extended bikini region. Large areas include the full back, full leg, full arm, or the extended Brazilian bikini region.
Because this unique technology allows for the efficient treatment of large areas, the back, shoulders, abdomen, and legs can be treated quickly. Facial areas such as the lip, chin, and beard can also be treated in minutes.
What Can I Expect after BBL™ Treatment?
You may experience some redness in the treatment area, which will begin to subside within a few hours. Most of the hair is removed immediately, with remaining hair falling out over within seven to fourteen days. Hair may appear to be “growing” during this time.
The laser hair removal process involves minimal recovery time with very low risk. Change in skin color is possible if you have tanned skin.
How Do I Care for My Skin after The Treatment?
After laser hair removal, keep the area clean and use a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 when outdoors. You will be sensitive to ultra-violet light and must avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed. Avoid sun tanning for one month before and after each BBL™ session. We will provide instructions for skin care products that minimize your risk of inflammation and ensure the shortest healing time.
You should pat dry only, and avoid rubbing irritated skin with a face cloth or towel. If blistering occurs during the first few days following your BBL™ laser procedure, keep the area moist with an ointment until the area has healed. You should not shave the treated area for 1-3 days post treatment. No waxing or tweezing is allowed during the entire course of treatment.
