Dysport’s Rejuvenating Effects

What is Dysport?

Dysport® is approved in 57 countries with 25 years of proven effectiveness. This versatile product was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 for treating forehead wrinkles and frown lines. Since then it has proven effective for an increasing range of conditions. Ninety-seven percent of users report they would use Dysport® in the future because of its impressive results.

Dysport® is a derivative of Botulinum toxin that works by weakening the muscles that create facial expression. Treatment relaxes the pull of the muscles selected for treatment, allowing the overlying skin to even out. In that process, wrinkles and lines resolve–giving a person a more relaxed, youthful appearance. When properly administered, a softer, more natural appearance emerges, without the ‘frozen look’ you may have seen with other products.

Dysport® Treatments Are Quick and Virtually Painless

Each treatment takes only 10- to 20-minutes. Depending on your treatment plan injections can be given in more than one part of the face and body at a time. The area is usually numbed before treatment, and the needles used to administer Dysport® are so thin that any discomfort is minimal. –Skilled injection technique is essential for optimal results.

You can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. Results are visible within a few days and can last up to six months. It may take a week or two to see the full effects. Repeat treatments are normally comparable to your first use experience.

Dysport® Has Been Effective in–

  • Treating severe, moderate and fine lines in the upper third of the face (without affecting the look or movement of the rest of your face). This includes what is commonly known as the “11’s” between the eyes, as well as forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet around the eyes. For more extensive facial rejuvenation, Dysport® injections can be combined with injectable fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane®.
  • Providing non-surgical “brow lifts.”
  • Resolving “Bunny lines” (lines on the nose). The lines disappear; your facial expressions remain intact.
  • Erasing small, fine lines around the lips, including on the upper lip.
  • Treating neck area lines
  • Plumping the upper lip (Dysport® can be placed in the lip muscle, causing the top lip to flip up slightly).
  • Smoothing “orange peel” skin on the chin by softening the underlying muscle.
  • Relieving TMJ “lockjaw” and “grinding”—when injected into the masseter (jaw muscle).
  • Alleviating Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Dysport® can be placed wherever the patient has excessive sweating, e.g., the underarms, hands, or feet.
  • Relieving neck muscle spasms.
  • Treating upper limb muscle spasms and stiffness (elbows, wrists, fingers) with the same benefits for the same lower limb conditions (ankles, toes).
  • Stopping headaches.

Do Not Take Dysport® If You Have–

  • A botulinum toxin allergy.
  • A cow’s milk allergy.
  • An infection, swelling, or muscle weakness in the area where the medicine will be injected.
  • Had a side effect after receiving a botulinum toxin in the past.
  • Had surgical changes to your face.
  • Droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds.
  • Deep facial scars.

Dysport® is also contraindicated if you have a serious neurological syndrome like seizures or myasthenia gravis; breathing disorders like asthma or emphysema; cardiovascular issues; or diabetes.

Post-treatment Side Effects May Include–

  • Redness or bruising around the injection site.
  • Temporary soreness.
  • A mild headache lasting a few hours.
  • Some patients also have reported temporary allergic reactions resulting in flu-like symptoms and skin rashes.
  • Also, inform your doctor if you have any of the following normally temporary side effects—localized numbness, headache, swelling, bruising, burning sensation during injection, or uneven eyebrows.

The Following Rare Complications Would Require Immediate Attention–

Call your plastic surgeon at once if you have a hoarse voice, drooping eyelids, vision problems, severe muscle weakness, loss of bladder control, or trouble breathing, talking, or swallowing. Some of these effects, though uncommon, are possible up to several weeks after receiving a Dysport® injection.

How Dysport® is Different from Botox®

Botox® came to market in 2002, seven years before Dysport®. They are very similar in application and effect.

There are some noteworthy differences, however–

  • Dysport® is more diluted than Botox®, but is injected at higher dose, making them comparable in cost.
  • Dysport® works somewhat more quickly (2-5 days vs. 4-7 days for Botox).
  • This also means that Dysport® diffuses to a wider area–giving it an advantage in some areas of the face, whereas–
  • Botox may be more effective where greater precision is desirable or when dealing with thicker muscles.

Your technician or doctor use the substance that he or she is most familiar with to ensure the best application technique and optimal results.
