What is a Butt Lift? (Butt Augmentation)

A butt lift, also known as gluteoplasty, is a surgical procedure that lifts and tightens the skin of the buttocks and back of upper thighs to provide a more youthful, attractive contour. Surrounding tissue is repositioned as part of the process. It also reduces visible cellulite and improves the shape of the buttocks. This can be done by increasing the size, correcting proportional imbalances, enhancing the contour, and improving firmness.

For many women and men, the butt is a major area of concern. An insufficient or ‘fallen butt’ can make it difficult to wear youthful clothes or feel confident in a bathing suit, significantly undermining the quality of your social life.

Unfortunately, as we age, most of us experience a loss of skin elasticity and the migration of fat deposits away from the buttocks to other areas of the body. Heredity or weight loss/gain often intensify this problem.

Best Candidates for Butt Lifts

You should be near your ideal weight before considering this procedure. It’s also important that you be in good health (you will need a physical exam to confirm this), and have a healthy diet and lifestyle. If you’re a smoker, you’ll have to stop smoking a month or more before this surgery.

Be aware that a standard butt lift doesn’t include removal of significant fat deposits. During your consultation with Dr. Roth, he’ll show you before and after pics to ensure you have realistic expectations about the outcome.

Pre-Operative Gluteoplasty Considerations

A butt lift is typically a two-hour procedure, allowing most patients to go home the day of their surgery. You’ll need to block out enough time for post-op recovery and arrange for someone to drive you to your procedure and stay with you the first night after surgery. Though you’ll feel much better after three-four days, you will not be able to sit for two to four weeks. So, if you return to work in less than two weeks, you’ll need to arrange for a standing desk or adopt some other strategy. Your surgeon will also require that you adjust, cease, or start taking certain prescription and over the counter medications before your surgery.

The Consultation

During your initial consultation, the surgeon will help you refine your post-surgery buttocks volume and contour objectives. As with any other surgery, you need to ask questions about the kind of anesthesia you’ll receive, etc.

A buttock lift may be part of a total body lift or a lower body lift, common after weight loss surgery. It’s usually best to combine procedures instead of experiencing the added cost and greater time commitment with sequential procedures. While most people who have buttock lifts go home the same day, the hospital stay may be longer if other procedures are performed simultaneously.

The Surgery

A butt lift may be performed either under general anesthesia or using a combination of local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. Your surgeon will recommend the best choice for your situation. –Be assured that Dr. Roth only works with Board Certified Anesthesiologists in his accredited Surgery Center.

In Dr. Roth’s buttock augmentation program, clients are carefully walked through the entire procedure as early as the first consultation. Currently, there are two types of buttock implants, and there are several reasons why some people choose one over the other:

Silicone implants

Silicone implants use silica-filled gel that resembles the shape of human buttocks. These implants come in different shapes and sizes to suit the patient’s body accordingly. By creating a small incision in the depressed area between the buttocks, the surgeon can safely insert the implants to the upper area of the buttocks.

A butt lift can vary depending on the amount and location of excess skin and fat. Incisions are usually placed to excise an ellipse of skin on the upper portion of the buttocks (within the bikini line). Excess skin is then removed, and the remaining skin pulled to its new position.

Finally, the incisions are closed with sutures (often with reinforcing surgical tape and skin adhesive). Dressings or bandages are applied, and there may be small drainage tubes temporarily placed under the skin to help evacuate excess blood and fluid.

Post-Op Care and Instructions

After surgery, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be monitored by surgical staff. They will fit you with a compression garment that you’ll need to wear 24/7 the first two weeks. You should be able to resume all normal activities 4 weeks after your surgery. A small amount of swelling may continue through week 6.

Again, you are strongly advised not to sit for a full week following the procedure. Most patients can return to work after two weeks, provided they avoid sitting for prolonged periods. Strenuous or extended activity, including sitting for protracted periods, should be avoided for at least a month. It’s also recommended that post-op patients avoid driving for at least two weeks, and use a medically prescribed cushion during the third week. These guidelines can vary widely based on the patient’s health, the techniques used, and other individual circumstances

Neglecting these precautions will jeopardize your long-term results and increase the likelihood of complications. Risk factors include bleeding or hematoma, poor wound healing, blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and cardiac/pulmonary complications.

As with all surgeries, contact your surgeon immediately if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, unusual heartbeats, or excessive bleeding.

The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)

A Brazilian butt lift, by contrast with a standard butt lift, adds volume to the buttocks by using multiple injections of the patient’s own fat to lift and enhance a shapely body profile. People of all ages and body types are having this popular procedure. Most patients opt for a result that is proportional to the body. Contrary to popular perception, the Brazilian Butt lift not about getting the biggest butt possible!
For professional guidance on whether this procedure is a better option for you than a standard butt lift, schedule a consultation with Dr. Roth at our surgery practice.

The pre-op requirements for a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure include–

  • A BMI (Body Mass Index) of less than 35 kg/m2 to help reduce the risk of post-op complications
  • Avoiding aspirin products one week before surgery to minimize blood loss during surgery
  • Getting a physical exam and a CBC blood test

The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) Procedure

Fat Extraction

Suction-assisted tumescent liposuction is used to extract fat which will be later used for the fat graft to the buttocks. Common areas liposuctioned include the back (directly above the buttocks), the stomach, and the thighs. This procedure alone will give your lower body a more attractive look.

The fat is then processed (refined) and transferred to the buttocks in hundreds of injections at different depths (though not into the muscles). This ensures that the patient gets the highest, safest permanent absorption rate.

BBL Fat transfer

Also known as Brazilian butt lift, fat transfer uses human fat as the fillers in this certain kind of buttock augmentation. The process of fat transfer starts by harvesting the fat of the patient to undergo the surgery. Once the surgeon has enough fat to use for the procedure, the fat then is injected in different parts of the buttocks to create an even contour. Brazilian butt lift usually goes with liposuction.

This procedure is especially effective in filling the upper quadrant of the buttocks to create a lifted, perky contour.

Butt Implants/Buttock Augmentation

A third, now less common Butt Lift procedure is buttock augmentation. Beginning with a 3-inch incision made at the midline of the buttocks, your surgeon creates a pocket for solid silicone implants, usually inserting them between your muscle and fat tissues. Like breast implants, buttock implants come in different sizes and shapes, and can even be customized. These natural-feeling implants help round out the upper and outer parts of the buttocks.

Buttock implantation is performed under general anesthesia, typically on an outpatient basis. After placing the implants, the plastic surgeon must assure that both buttocks are symmetrical and look natural before closing the incisions. This procedure usually takes about two or three hours.

–Be aware that complications with butt augmentation are more common than with the standard Butt Lift or Brazilian Butt Lift.
