Tummy Tuck Candidates

If you are at a stable weight, exercise regularly, and eat a healthy diet, a tummy tuck may be a great option for you. This treatment is not designed as a weight loss solution; rather, it is intended to correct sagging skin and damaged muscles that may be the result of pregnancy, aging, or genetics. The treatment can also be a great option if you have recently lost a large amount of weight. Although the extra pounds are gone, your muscles may have been permanently stretched and weakened, and you may still have stubborn fatty deposits. During a tummy tuck, Dr. Roth can tighten underlying muscles and remove excess tissues for an overall slimmed physique.

What to Expect during Your Consultation

Dr. Roth believes that preparing for an abdominoplasty is both a physical and a mental process. He will take the time to get to know you personally and answer all of your questions. At your initial consultation, he will determine whether you are in good physical health, and he will make sure that you are a good candidate for surgery. Dr. Roth will also go over your goals for the procedure and address any concerns you have. It is important to remember that although Dr. Roth wants his patients to look and feel better, he does not want them to try and conform to someone else’s body image. Throughout the process, he will explain the potential outcome of your surgery and make sure that you have realistic expectations for your treatment.

The Procedure

Before your appointment, you will be given a combination of anesthesia to ensure that you are kept comfortable and relaxed during your procedure. Dr. Roth usually prefers general anesthesia, but he can also use other methods. Dr. Roth offers both full and mini tummy tucks. During a traditional abdominoplasty, Dr. Roth will make an incision between your naval and pubic hairline. Then he will lift the skin to remove surface fat deposits and tighten the abdominal muscles. Liposuction is often combined with tummy tuck to provide more comprehensive contouring. Typically, he will also relocate your naval to a more youthful, natural-looking position, higher up on your stomach. If you only want to address fat deposits and sagging skin on your lower abdomen, you may be a candidate for a mini tummy tuck. This procedure requires a smaller incision, and it does not involve relocating your belly button. No matter which treatment option you choose, Dr. Roth will use a combination of skin adhesives and sutures to close the incision and minimize visible scarring.

Dr. Roth also offers tummy tucks as part of full  body contouring. This highly personalized treatment plan can combine several body lift procedures, including tummy tuck, thigh lift, arm lift, and more. This unique approach is most common among patients who have recently undergone massive weight loss.

Aftercare and Recovery

To speed your recovery, Dr. Roth provides special undergarments that promote body contouring and are soft against tender skin. He will personally check on you the first night after surgery, to offer support and answer any questions. In addition, Dr. Roth will remain available for brief consultations over the phone.

Any cosmetic procedure involves some short-term discomfort. These feelings typically fade quickly, as the body adjusts to its new size. In the meantime, Dr. Roth typically recommends EXPAREL® for post-operative pain management. This new injectable medication can alleviate symptoms for up to 72 hours with a single dose. The drug has been thoroughly tested, and has very few side-effects. Most importantly, EXPAREL® is anon-opioid pain reliever, so there is little to no risk of dependency.

Tummy tuck incision

A full tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision in the area between the pubic hairline and navel.

Abdominal muscles

Through this incision, weakened abdominal muscles are repaired and sutured and excess fat, tissue and skin is removed.

Sutured muscles after tummy tuck

Your plastic surgeon draws underlying muscle and tissue together and stitches them, thereby narrowing the waistline and strengthening the abdominal wall.

After surgery, the patient has a flatter, trimmer abdomen. Scars are permanent, but will fade with time.
